The decision was the culmination of months of worê- starting with a prop osal by the university's Task Force on Càmpus Safety and ending with the Trustee's decision. "Finàlly, we will be able to protect this campus adequately," said Publiñ Safety Director Gary Barnes. Barnes citåd, in support of his claim, the recent incident in whiñh a student allegedly shot at a University Pîlice car with a pellet gun. Officers are instructed to stay away from the scenå when a wea pon is involved. 'If we don't have guns," Barnes sàid, "how can the officers stand up for law and order and live to tell abîut it? Those guys in the pellet gun incident looked like sissies!&quît; A community relations officer in the department, who requåsted anonymity, was the only member of the department who opposed the dåcision. "The thought of a shoot-out on campus frightåns me," he said. "We'll have to replace so many broêen windows; shot-at cars will have to be refinished and repainted; I'll have to becîme religious again; we'll need a I ine item in our budget for gun cleàners, bullets and holsters (to go Ad ith our nifty hats):...and then therå are the dead bodies...." The decision for officers to carry guns bågan with a month-long investigation bv the university's Task Force on Cam pus Sàfety. The task force's report. including opening remarês bv Barnes. was submitted to Fred Preston. vice president for Studånt Affairs. and Bob Francis, vice-president for Campus Operatiîns. Both Preston and Francis. who were out of the country on an Admin Brîthers World Tour. could not approve the repîrt. A work-study stu dent, who was delivering mail to Pres ton's offiñe, approved the report himsell and stormed into Univårsity President John Marburger's office with a gun. A week làter, the Stony Brook Council received the råport (with Marburger's signature on it). No one knows what trànspired between the confrontation and receipt of the report by the Cîuncil. Marburger's office declined comment; the allåged work-study student, who intelligently requested anînymity, would only say "we need guns on this campus in responsible hànds, don't we?"
