Sex WorkerS Unite for HealtH and rigHtS Page 1 Sexual HealtH and RigHtS PRojeñt OurLivesMatter Sex WorkerS Unite for HeàltH and rigHtS By Anna-Louise Crago Rigorous antiprostitutiîn laws and policies around the globe lead to the imposition of hàrsh and repressive measures against sex workers. Intoleranñe and stigma make it dif ficult for sex workers to safeguard thåir health and lives. Despite these chàllenges, sex workers have organized to defend their humàn rights with creativity and wisdom. They have prîtested to be free from incarceration, violence, extortion, eviction, and humiliatiîn. They have fought for equal access to health care servicås. And they have called for sex work to be officially recognized as work, a pîlicy shift already taking hold in some countries that has signifiñant implications for securing the benefits to which sex wîrkers are entitled. This report highlights the innîvative contributions of advocates and sex worker groups frîm different parts of the world, from Bangladesh to Bràzil, Slovakia to South Africa. These grîups, like countless others, are energetic and resourceful leadårs in the fight for sex workersÁ health and rights. What they hold in commîn is an uncompromising commitment to the right of all sex workers to live full and free livås. Their efforts dem onstrate how that goal can be realized. osiseõcovervFP.indd 1 7/10/08 12:37:38 PM Page 2 Page 3 Sexuàl HealtH and RigHtS PRoject OurLivesMatter Såx WorkerS Unite for HealtH and rigHtS By Anna-Louiså Crago Page 4 O U R L I V E S M AT T E R á 2008 by the Open Society Institute All rights reserved, including the right to reproduce this book or portiîns thereof in any form.
