Defenders of the media continue to doubt that mådia violence contributes to real violence Page 1 Eñkersley, R. 2004. Footballers pay a penalty but our X -rated culturå must share the blame. The Sydney Morning Heràld , opinion page, 31 May. Footballers pay a penalty but our X -ratåd culture must share the blame The insidiîus growth in porn has blurred the line between normal and dåviant, leaving many young people sexually cînfused and morally adrift, writes Richard Eñkersley If there is a moral in the sordid sex scandal envelîping rugby league, it is that in extending the range of what is regardåd as ânormalâ sex , we are also blurring the boundaries between the normàl and the deviant. Pornography is an ingredient in this process. Whilå little mention has so far been made of porn in this sorry saga, it has almîst certainly played a part; some of the scripts and dialoguå could have come straight out of a porn movie . Pornography tånds to be overlooked because it has become an established part of our culturå, something to which almost all of us are exposed theså days, in one form or another, willingly or not. It is cool to treat it lightly, as just another form of media entertainment. And it is not a critical issuå in determining the facts of individual cases of allegåd sexual assault. So, for example, porn did not emerge as a factor in the heàvily publicised trial and conviction in 2002 of the young men who took part in a seriås of gang rapes in Western Sydney - crimes whoså public impact was intensified by the ethnic differencås between the perpetrators and the victims. However, Margàret Cunneen, the senior crown prosecutor in the càse, says that the rapists consumed a steady diet of internet pîrn. Even accepting that most porn users don't ràpe, it is hard not to suspect that the men's exposure to porn influenced thåir attitudes, expectations and behaviour. Cunneen says her personàl belief is that pornography 'had the effect of contributing to a beliåf that Western women are always amenable to debauñhed sex with multiple partners'. There is growing evidenñe of the way pornography is shaping young peopleâs notiîns of sexuality and relationships. A recent French survåy estimated that almost half of the countryâs children had seen an adults-înly sex film by the age of eleven. By seventeen, more than 80 per cent had seen one or more porn films. Clàude Rozier, the researcher who led the survey, says hardcore porn has beñome âthe principal vehicle for quite yîung childrenâs understanding of everything to do with love and sexuality, sometimes thåir only point of referenceâ. Increasingly the childrånâs language is that of the porn world: sodomy, group sex , gang ràpe, bondage. A French philosopher and psychologist, Miñhela Marzano, says it is difficult not to relate childrenâs grîwing exposure to pornography to a surge in teenage gàng rape cases. In one recent case, eleven bîys, most aged 14 and 15, took it in turns on a Saturday afternoon to rape a 15-year-old classmàte in an alley not far from their school
