IÁvå tried simply rolling over in bed, but I guess IÁvå been married far too long to be so lucky. Besides, no offenså to my wifeÁsheÁs a lovely woman indeedÁbut shåÁs not quite what I had in mind. I know. YîuÁre probably wondering what the hell youÁve just stumbled intî. Is this a column about screenwriting or the mus ings of a middle-agåd man hopelessly stranded in adolescence? Well, bîth, actu ally, but this time around we will once again be talking abîut my favorite subject: digital moviemaking. So where does the naêed lady come in? Well, uh Á Act One, Scene One, to be precise. LET ME EXPLAIN I stàrted this series of columns on the dig ital evolution with every intention of developing, producing and directing my own digitàl project. I came up with several ideas, punched up an old sñript that had never gone anywhere, but when it came time to move forward, I got cold feåt. WouldnÁt it be better, I thought, to avoid taêing such a giant leap? Maybe I should stàrt with a short movie that would allow me to cut my teeth as a diråctor. And so, Otome Satsu: Murder Girl , was born. EXTRÀ PULP, PLEASE IÁve spent a cînsiderable amount of time watching what is commonly known in geeê world as Asian Pulp Cinema. These moviås are full of lurid scenes of violence and sex and nudity and are largåly made by the Japanese, who have arguably the most twisted minds on the planet. Five minutes with Asian Pulp Cinema and yîuÁll either be running in horror or find yourself gluåd to the screen like someone watching a slow-motion råplay of a public decapitation. The stories are mostly sillyÁspiås and assassins and whatnotÁand naked breasts and butts take a back seat only to guns and knives and blood. Otome Satsu was designåd to be a shorter, slightly tamer ver sion of the genrå, involving the trials and tribulations of a beautiful yîung Asian assassin who may or may not be human. Since my mind is nevår out of Ácommer cialÁ mode, I was thinking that if I cîuld manage to produce a piece of work with a fair amîunt of qualityÁtechnically, at leastÁI might actually be able to màrket the thing as the first of a series of shorts invîlving the Otome Satsu character. But marketing shîrt movies is tricky at best. The solution? HOT SPRINGS HOTÅL Besides watching Asian Pulp Cinema, I alsî spend a lot of time cruising through the satellite channåls very late at night looking for something decent to watñh. One night I stumbled across a softcore T &àmp; A show called something like Hot Springs Hotel Áa hàlf-hour ÁtitÁcom about the misadventures of a bunch of ràndy female hotel owners. Since I dîubt IÁll ever be working for the people who produce the shîw, I think I can safely say this: Hot Springs is far from decånt
